The Magic of White Onions

Do you see this girl? She is the epitome of health today. But she wasn't yesterday. She was pretty darn miserable. She spiked a temperature and was very clingy.

Late at night, I decided to pull out the magic white onion to get her all better. Yes. A white onion  works miracles. Thanks to a fantastic tip by my wonderful sister Christi, I now use a white onion to get rid of ear infections.  I can't say for certain if she actually had an ear infection, but it seems to me, after 5 children, that she was showing all the signs of it.

Isn't it annoying? Your kid is miserable and can't sleep. You take them to the doctor's office. You wait for an hour to see the doc, and then, sure enough.  You are sent home with a prescription for an antibiotic that they are supposed to take twice a day for 10 days. And inevitably, after about 4 days, you keep forgetting to give them their dosages.

Now I have found a 50 cent solution to this problem: the white onion.  You cut it in half, steam it until it is soft, and then wrap it in a towel. Let it cool for a minute and then put it on your ailing kid's ears, for about 15 minutes on each side.

This is exactly what I did to Julia last night. This morning, she got out of bed and she is back to normal. There is no fever, she is not clinging to me, and she is acting like Julia again.

So, all of you moms out there.  Always keep a white onion in your pantry, just in case.
