The Denti$t

Almost the first thing I did when we got here was to get my little girl into the dentist.  Her teeth were horrific and we waited to get them fixed with the move to Utah. It is a lot more affordable here and that was important because she was not on the insurance. And this could not wait, they were so bad.

The final verdict was 14 cavities. Holy crap! 14! This is what happens when you steal mom's candy, hide it in your room and eat it every night before you go to bed for about a month.  Candy is expensive.

It is a darn good thing I didn't wait to get her in to the dentist.  About 4 days after her initial appointment with Dr. Moffat, this girl goes and gets an abscessed tooth.  Do you see that swollen jaw? The bad teeth were probably aggravated by everyone getting sick. The abscess was pretty wretched. Usually I just let things play themselves out before I rush a kid to the doctor. But after asking my friend Paisley about it, she was really worried and told me to get her in ASAP.

The dentist put her on antibiotics and pain meds and we waited for the big appointment, when all teeth would be fixed at one time at the hospital. Yes, the girl had to go to the hospital for her appointment because she had to get general anesthesia.

Here she is right before they took back. The appointment took several hours and after 5 hours total, I was able to take her home.

But look at this horrific tooth, the abscessed one. They couldn't save it, so the doctor pulled it out. Now there is a big hole in her mouth.

I am just glad we are done and you can bet that there will be no candy anywhere near a bedroom!

They Blossom

I think this is turning out to be the longest month in the history of my life. Is it really still January? We have been plugging along here, doing stuff. My children are just blossoming and I am along for the ride.

Harry has really become quite the puzzler. I am amazed at how skilled he is at puzzles. He will spend long periods of time putting puzzles together, and he just loves it. He likes for me to watch, but does not need my help.

He also likes to collect things. It is a trait sent to him from heaven. The kid is a hoarder. Lately, he has collected every little toy he can get his hands on and puts it in bags and has to take it everywhere. The best kinds of bags are Julia's purses, so Harry was prepared this last Sunday. He had a fabulous green bag to accessorize his snazzy church outfit, and a stuffed dog. He calls the dog Pepperoni. Pepperoni is the name of Mary's dog. If it works for her dog, I guess it will work for his stuffed animal too.

And in other news, Julia is getting ready to get major dental renovations. Apparently, the kid has about 20 cavities. Yes, go ahead and award me all the Mother of the Year awards I deserve. I am so proud of myself, what can I say?  Tomorrow, one lucky dentist is going to be getting the down payment he needs for his new Mercedes Benz.

After Five Years...Dr. Kim

You know when you have to do something and you keep putting it off until next week? Before you know it, next week is five years later.

And so it was with me and the dentist...

Finally, I made myself go to the dentist. I really didn't want to, but I did it. I was bracing myself for the worst. The last dentist I went to said I needed two crowns and he seemed kind of disgusted with my teeth.  I was surprised at the diagnosis, because I never had any pain there, just ugly metal fillings.

That wa$ probably one of the rea$on$ why I kept putting it off. You know what I mean?

But I was ready today...whatever Dr. Kim said, I was just going to get it scheduled and get it done.

Guess what?

NO CAVITIES! NO CROWNS!

No wonder that dentist in Vegas went out of business.

Just as a recommendation, if you are looking for a dentist in Reno, I would highly recommend Dr. Yeong Kim of Best Dental.  The office is small and simple and he is very nice.  And just because he said my metal fillings are fine, I know he is the dentist for me.
